The QuickBooks Online CSV import format

QuickBooks Online is picky about CSV imports. It accepts two layouts, and a raw bank export almost never matches either. Here's the exact format — and how to get there in one step.

QuickBooks Online's Upload from file accepts a CSV in one of two shapes:

3-column format

DateDescriptionAmount
01/15/2026ACH DEPOSIT PAYROLL2500.00
01/16/2026CARD PURCHASE STAPLES-84.12

One amount column: deposits positive, withdrawals negative.

4-column format

DateDescriptionCreditDebit
01/15/2026ACH DEPOSIT PAYROLL2500.00
01/16/2026CARD PURCHASE STAPLES84.12

Money in and money out in separate columns.

Getting your bank CSV into this shape

Raw bank exports have extra columns, header junk, balance columns and inconsistent dates. Drop your file into the converter, and it outputs a clean CSV — 3 column or CSV — 4 column ready for QuickBooks Online. Import via Transactions → Bank transactions → Upload from file.

Using QuickBooks Desktop instead? It uses .QBO, not CSV — see convert CSV to QBO.

FAQ

What date format does QuickBooks Online want?

Match your account's regional setting (commonly MM/DD/YYYY in the US). The converter outputs a consistent date format you can rely on.

Do I include a header row?

QuickBooks lets you map columns during upload, so a header row is fine. The converter produces clean headers.
